I am a former Diagnostic Radiographer, working at home and abroad for 16 years, gaining my BSc(Hons) at The University of Derby. I worked in the NHS and for the Australian Health Department taking images of inside the human body that supported the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, injuries and abnormalities.

After my son was born I retrained as a Science teacher gaining my PGCE and QTS at Newman University in Birmingham. I have since taught in several different schools in my local area.

I began tutoring 5 years ago when I was asked by a friend to help their daughter through her GCSE’s.

It was whilst working 1-2-1 with her that I discovered a real love of working with students who were struggling with the subject but who really wanted to learn. I also realised how much I was able to help my pupils grow in confidence and gain self-belief which allowed them to achieve their maximum potential when it came to their exams.

Why study science?

Science is not just about knowing stuff, it’s a way of thinking. It gives children the skills to question how they look at the world and what people tell them. Studying science helps young people to approach problems in an organised manner and allows them to find creative ways to solve them.

It encourages children to be open minded about new ideas that challenge thinking and gives them the courage to get things wrong, change their minds and analyse data and results. Science ultimately gives children the tools they will need to approach any of life’s problems.

The skills that are learned in GCSE Science can be applied to a whole range of different careers. Game designers will use the logic, testing and evaluating that is taught. Journalists will apply their knowledge of research which is an essential skill in the media industry. Chef’s need to be precise, work well under pressure and know how to organise teams, whereas a Sports coach will utilise the Scientific approaches taught in lessons to further the careers of their talented students.

Finally, in the world of business and self employment, skills learned when studying science teach you how to evaluate data, make and build plans and build confidence.
